wasp stingThink your garden is beautiful and safe?  Think again!  It is full of all sorts of creepy crawly insects that will think nothing of having you for lunch.  Recent news stories about the false widow spider, closing down schools where one was spotted and sending a man to hospital where he literally watched his skin rot away show just how unsafe your garden actually is.

The reality is, however, that these are rare horror stories.  Sure, false widows exist and their bite definitely hurts.  And yes, some people have a severe reaction to these which can in fact lead to necrosis in the skin.  However, more people die in the UK each year from bees and wasp stings and the welts left by horseflies are famous the world over.  Yet we don’t close down schools and fumigate our homes whenever we see one of those.

The reality is that insects are small and fragile and they have to be able to defend themselves.  They would rather not, because an attack by an insect often spells death (with bees for instance) and if it doesn’t kill them, it leaves them vulnerable until they recover.  Hence, hurting you will be a last resort option.

However, that being said, it can still be useful to know what dangerous actually lurk in your garden:

  • The wasp (and the hornet) can sting quite badly.  Some people are allergic to it.  In fact, most allergic reactions in our country are caused by wasp stings.  Prevent getting stung by remaining calm and walking away.  Don’t wear any bright colors and remove any wasp nests.
  • Bees have a sting quite similar to wasps.  However, they leave their stinger and die.  You must remove the stinger so that you don’t get an infection.  Bee stings hurt, but only those with allergies will find them anything other than a painful inconvenience.  Avoid stings by staying calm and always check your sweet drinks to make sure there’s no bees in there.
  • Ticks are gross and increasingly common in our gardens.  They can transfer Lyme disease, which means you have to avoid them.  Their bites don’t hurt because they will numb your area first.   Always wear long sleeves and trousers in overgrown or forested areas and use a tick repellent.
  • Mosquitoes are annoying and they have really itchy bites.  Malaria does not exist in the UK, so you don’t have to worry about them.  Avoid bites by covering up and having citronella candles when you’re outside.
  • Flower bugs actually chew off a piece of your skin.  This sounds horrible and is actually quite painful and slow to heal.  It isn’t serious, but very annoying.  Cover up when you’re gardening to prevent them.
  • Ladybirds are beautiful creatures that most of us welcome in our garden, even if it is just to get rid of greenfly.  However, the harlequin ladybird has recently arrive to our shores, which is bigger and far more aggressive.  They are usually more orange in colour and have more spots, as well as a white spot on its head.  All ladybirds can bite, but the harlequin can actually be quite painful.
